Might I have discovered a few "new” pieces of equipment ideal for combating piracy?

That is a good solution...If we could do it. We can't go to every person in the world and stop them from being pirates. As a Sailor myself I have seen pirates from different countries. The only thing we could do is teach children while their young in school to not do it and tell them the penalties.
